A Caterpillar Skid Steer was parked behind a diner in Suffolk, NY that was having construction work done. It was discovered missing one Monday evening. The machine’s owners, knowing the thriving market for stolen construction equipment, were smart enough to protect this asset with the LoJack® System, which helped local law enforcement recover the tractor quickly and safely.
On February 3rd, 2014, the Caterpillar’s owner contacted the Suffolk County Police 2nd Precinct to report the crime. Officers took a written report and entered the information into the Suffolk County stolen auto computer, and the NCIC computer, which is the stolen car alert for the United States. This action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Skid Steer.
A short while later, officers from the Suffolk County 2nd Precinct picked up the homing signal from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers located the tractor machine at a golf course, where it was parked, abandoned and out of fuel. The Skid Steer was retrieved and soon returned to its owners, who were ecstatic to get their equipment back in one piece.
