The theft of construction equipment is an all too common occurrence all over the United States, which is why so many owners of these machines choose to protect their assets by installing the LoJack® system. In this case, a Case Skid Steer stolen in Chicago, IL is recovered in less than a half hour after activation.
On February 10th, 2014, the Case’s owners discovered it was missing from a construction site and contacted the Chicago Police Department. Officers verified the theft and entered the machine’s information into the NCIC state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Skid Steer.
A short while later, an Illinois State Police sergeant picked up the homing signal from the stolen equipment on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle, and followed it to a metal fabrication factory. The sergeant was joined by officers from the North East Metropolitan Auto Theft (NEMAT), an ISP task force and an agent from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). They observed the Case in an open garage at the property, along with a Bobcat that had been reported stolen. Additional pieces of equipment including a trailer and snow plow blade were towed from the scene for identification as possibly stolen items. One suspect was taken into custody and the undamaged Skid Steer was soon returned to the construction site.
