It was the day after Christmas, the owner of a Nissan Maxima had dropped off a date at her apartment complex in Charlotte, NC, and returned to his car when she called to ask him to come back. She was not there to let him in so he once again attempted to leave. A man followed the victim, struck him in the back with a sharp object and threatened to kill him if he didn’t give up his valuables and keys. A second male arrived and both men got in the Maxima and drove away. The LoJack® system hidden in the vehicle allowed police to not only recover it that same day but take two suspects into custody as well.
On December 26th, 2013, the Nissan’s owner contacted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) to report the crime. Officers verified the vehicle theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. The LoJack transponder concealed in the Maxima, which was installed at Hilltop Nissan in East Hanover, NJ, was then automatically activated,
A short while later, CMPD officers picked up the homing signals from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Officers from the Gastonia PD joined the pursuit. Finally, a CMPD aviation unit located the Nissan in a convenience store parking lot. Two suspects were arrested and the Maxima was retrieved and soon returned to its thankful owner.
