LA County Deputies Use LoJack to Recover Stolen Dodge Intrepid, Arrest Parolee (Owner’s Grandson)

On November 17, 2012, the owner of a 2003 Dodge Intrepid contacted the Whittier Police Department to report that her vehicle had been stolen by her grandson, a parolee.
Whitter Police verified the theft and entered the Dodge’s information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.
Minutes later, police units from the LA County Sheriff’s Department — Norwalk Station and the Whittier Police Department picked up the Dodge’s silent LoJack homing signal on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Following the directional and signal strength cues on the LoJack computers, the deputy and officers tracked the vehicle to the 11700 block of Fulton Wells, a gated retirement community.
As the units entered the location, they followed the signal to a parking area, where they observed a suspect exiting the stolen Dodge. They immediately took the suspect into custody and later booked him for Driving Without Owner’s Consent and Parole Violations. The undamaged Dodge, valued at $4,025, was later released back to the victim.
