On the evening of April 10, 2012, the owner of a 1998 Audi A4 parked his vehicle in a lot on Putnam Street in Manchester, NH. When he returned to his vehicle early the next morning, he discovered it missing and immediately reported the theft to the Manchester Police Department.
The responding officer completed a stolen vehicle report and relayed the information to the department’s LEAPS operator. The operator entered the Audi’s information into the New Hampshire and NCIC computer databases. This routine entry automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Audi, prompting it to emit a silent homing signal.
A few hours later, officers from the Manchester Police Department began to pick up the homing signal on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their police vehicles. A Manchester officer successfully tracked and quickly located the unoccupied and undamaged stolen Audi, parked on Bartlett Street in Manchester. The officer had the Audi towed from the scene for safekeeping until the victim could be notified.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Audi at the owner’s request, on February 27, 1998.
