The owner of a 2005 Honda Accord parked and locked his vehicle on the street where he lives in the South Bronx. When he returned for the vehicle in the early morning hours of April 11, 2012, he discovered the vehicle missing and immediately contacted the Police of the 43rd Precinct of the New York Police Department.

When the NYPD officers arrived, they completed a written stolen vehicle report and had this information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed within the stolen Honda. Neither the owner nor law enforcement agents had to take any further action to activate the LoJack Vehicle Recovery Network, as LoJack’s interface with the police is both seamless and instantaneous.

A short while later, officers with the Queens North Auto Larceny Unit picked up the Accord’s silent LoJack signal on their patrol vehicles’ LoJack Police Tracking Computers. Following the directional and signal strength cues on the tracking computer, the officers tracked the vehicle as it crossed the Whitestone Bridge, connecting the Bronx with Queens. The officers followed the signal to the Springfield Gardens section of Queens, confines of the 105th Precinct. There, they located the vehicle, parked in a driveway of a private house.

The officers set up surveillance on the Accord; after a few minutes, two men exited the house, and a third arrived in a vehicle. The three individuals engaged in conversation and began to survey the Accord. At that point, the police converged upon the scene and conducted an investigation. Their investigation revealed that the first two men had stolen the vehicle and were attempting to sell it to the third man. The first two men were placed under arrest, and the Accord was recovered without any damage. The police notified the owner, who was elated to learn that his vehicle was recovered so quickly, and without damage.
