On February 18, 2012, officers from the Costa Mesa Police Department began to pick up the silent LoJack signal from a 1999 Toyota Corolla reported stolen 19 minutes earlier to the Westminster Police Department. Following the directional signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer installed in their patrol vehicles, the officers tracked the signal to the 3000 block of Harbor Boulevard. There, they observed one male suspect inside, seated in the driver’s seat.
Officers quickly acted, taking the suspect into custody. Their investigation revealed that the suspect was a homeless man who lived in the same area as the theft, and the victim had actually seen the suspect in the area. The suspect was detained for Receiving Stolen Property.
The Costa Mesa Detectives are conducting a follow-up investigation to see if the witnesses can identify the suspect.
